From Our Family Farm to Your Table
At Somis Valley Farm, we believe people should understand where their food comes from. Our dairy herd consists of A2/A2 Jersey cows raised with daily care and attention right here in Somis, California.
This page explains some of the characteristics that make our herd and raw milk unique.
What Is A2/A2 Milk?
A2/A2 refers to the genetic makeup of a cow and the type of beta casein protein she produces in her milk.
All of our dairy cows are selected for A2/A2 genetics. Many families specifically seek out A2 milk and appreciate having access to milk from verified A2/A2 Jersey cows.
Why Jersey Cows?
Jersey cows are known for producing rich, creamy milk with naturally high butterfat and protein levels.
Their milk is often recognized for:
- Rich flavor
- Natural cream content
- Excellent butterfat levels
- Beautiful golden color
Our Jersey cows are an important part of our family farm and receive individual care and attention.
Why Does the Cream Rise to the Top?
Unlike most grocery store milk, the cream in our milk naturally separates and rises to the top.
This is completely normal.
Simply shake the container before use if you prefer the cream mixed throughout the milk.
What Is Homogenization?
Homogenization is a process commonly used in commercial milk production that breaks cream into tiny particles so it remains evenly distributed throughout the milk.
Milk that has not been homogenized will naturally separate, allowing the cream to rise to the top.
Freshness Matters
Because herd share members receive milk directly from the herd’s production, there is very little time spent in storage, transportation, or large scale distribution systems.
Our focus is on careful handling, prompt cooling, and providing members with access to fresh dairy from animals they help support.
